Working at McDonald's after an unfinished collegial stint pursuing a computer science degree, Alex needed to find work that held more promise for him long-term.
In March he graduated from IWP's Automotive Program, and by May he was working in Rico's Auto in Gallup. He is now an Auto Tech, handling tire rotations, oil changes, fluid services, filter replacements, battery testing, and basic diagnostics. It's skilled work with room to advance.
The timing couldn't have been better, since Alex was soon to welcome his first child, a healthy young baby girl.
The program gives high school seniors hands-on construction training during their morning classes. Students spend two semesters learning the fundamentals through NCCER Core curriculum and OSHA 10, operating forklifts, and working with actual tools on real projects.
So far, the best endorsement a student has given is:
Now I don't want to go back to school.
A common sentiment, sure—but at least they're enjoying construction.

Dan McConnell of Gallup Portable Storage and Transport LLC, an employer of multiple IWP graduates, generously sponsored new uniforms for the students. They look great, and will lend a critical sense of the importance of what the students are working to accomplish to the high schoolers.

The new warehouse will expand our housing production and create permanent training facilities for IWP students - building both homes and careers for the community.
